What is TriWest?
TriWest Healthcare Alliance is a partner company of the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), administering benefits for veterans. Traditionally, veterans receive care through the VA’s network of medical facilities. However, there are times when the VA requires community providers to deliver services to its veterans. TriWest helps connect veterans with healthcare providers in their communities when VA facilities aren’t readily available or can’t provide the necessary care.
TriWest also manages networks of healthcare providers and processes claims for veterans who access care through these programs. Their focus is on ensuring that veterans have access to quality and timely healthcare services. This involvement streamlines the process of getting needed healthcare to veterans outside of traditional VA facilities.
To use TriWest, you must meet one of six criteria:
- Utilizing the TriWest Community Care Network is the optimal medical choice for your healthcare needs.
- Specific standards won’t be met if you try to receive care at a local VA facility or provider.
- There isn’t a full-service VA facility near you.
- You qualify for the Veterans Choice Program because you’re grandfathered in based on the distance eligibility rule.
- You aren’t able to receive the necessary services at a local VA facility.
- The current medical service line doesn’t meet the standards for quality set by the VA for medical services.
What’s the Difference Between TriWest and TriCare?
TriWest and TriCare are both associated with healthcare for military personnel and their families. However, they serve specific roles and cover different geographical areas. The differences are:
- TriCare
TriCare is the Department of Defense’s comprehensive healthcare program for active-duty service members, retirees, and their families. It is the overall health program.
- TriWest
TriWest insurance isn’t a traditional insurance company. It’s a network of community care providers. The participating providers are required to cover rehab, but there are specific qualification requirements and restrictions. TriWest is also the company that manages TriCare benefits in certain areas of the United States, primarily in the Western region.
Does TriWest Cover Rehab Treatment?
TriWest covers a variety of healthcare services for veterans and military members, including:
- Urgent, emergency, and primary care
- Behavioral health and mental health–Providers in the TriWest group do cover mental health services. While TriWest offers numerous behavioral and mental health options, many of these services may be partially covered under VA health benefits. Different methods of behavioral health treatment include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Some limitations and restrictions may apply.
- Vision and dental care
- Reproductive health
- VA Community Care Network (CCN)–The CCN provides healthcare services to veterans when the VA is unable to meet their needs.
- Case management–TriWest provides case management for people with complicated health requirements.
- Substance use disorder (SUD) treatment–TriWest covers a range of addiction treatment choices. This includes residential rehab, outpatient treatment, and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) through the provider network.
Does TriWest Cover Medications?
Treatment plans for substance use disorders may include medications. Some SUDs respond well to medications, including alcohol use disorder (AUD) and opioid use disorder (OUD). Medications may be covered through the TriWest provider network.

What Does TriWest Not Cover?
Because TriWest isn’t a health plan, there aren’t any specific services that aren’t covered. Instead, confirming what your TriCare or VA health benefits cover is essential when deciding on a provider who is a member of the TriWest network. You should also know that TriCare and VA health benefits won’t cover unapproved or unproven mental health treatments.
What States Does TriWest Serve?

- California

- Guam
- Hawaii
- Idaho
- Montana

Don’t Wait. Reach Out.
According to the VA, there are many ways for veterans or family members to reach out if a veteran is struggling and needs immediate help. The VA wants veterans to know that they aren’t alone and that healthcare professionals are available to provide support immediately. The “Don’t Wait. Reach Out” campaign is a valuable resource that connects veterans and their loved ones with resources and tools tailored to their specific needs, whether they seek immediate assistance or wish to research options at their own pace.
